Waitrose cut the plastic - and say bring your own

It is no secret, single use plastic is a huge problem. We are now realising more than ever that a change needs to be made. Supermarket chain Waitrose are stepping up the game in cutting single use plastic and have launched a pilot bring your own refill station.

So what can I get in the refill zone?

The refill zone has dispensers with goods such as:-

  • Rice;

  • Coffee;

  • Pasta;

  • Washing up liquid;

  • Waitrose being Waitrose (extra), also have a variety of beers and wine on tap too;

  • The UK's first supermarket 'Pick and mix' for frozen fruit;

  • Over 160 fruit and vegetables are also available plastic free.

Packaged equivalents of the products will remain in their usual areas as a test to see if shoppers change how they shop.

Waitrose head of corporate social responsibility Tor Harris expressed the concern in that “The top 10 UK supermarkets produce 810,000 tonnes of throwaway packaging each year, so we need to see other major retailers taking plastic reduction seriously and following Waitrose’s lead.”

The trial will run for 11 weeks until August 18, with Waitrose seeking as much feedback as possible.
